Can an eye infection cause dementia in the elderly?

My mother is 80 and has suddenly become disoriented. The have check for a UTI and she doesn't have one. However, she does have an eye infection. The nurse said, with her age, it could be early stages of dementia. My mother is normal very sharp and alert. Any help would be appreciated.
